Personal Statement

B.F.A The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Saxophone

Mr. Kaufman has taught saxophone and jazz students from the ages of nine to seventeen in Israel since 2010.
Born in Israel in 1991, Sagi started playing the alto saxophone at the age of 8, taking Sonny Rollins as his first artistic role model. Sagi attended the prestigious Thelma Yellin High School for Arts, where he studied with the iconoclastic educator, the late Amit Golan. In 2012, Sagi moved to New York City to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where he has studied with John Ellis, George Cables, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Mchenry, and Lee Konitz, and graduated in 2014. Sagi has played as a sideman, and led his own ensembles, in the Tel Aviv music scene, at international music festivals, and in New York City. Early on in his artistic growth, Sagi started to compose original music, and to explore the notion of less is more: leading large and small ensembles without harmonic instruments, and utilizing concepts from minimalist music. Sagis current trio, with Tal Yahalom on guitar, Ben Silashi on drums, and Sagi playing his alto saxophone and original compositions, is now performing in the New York City area.
