Personal Statement

I teach students of all ages and abilities to find confidence in their singing voice and achieve their performance goals, be that singing on stage or in the shower. My teaching approach contains the following emphases:
1.) BODY: For a singer-actor, our instrument isnt contained in a caseit IS our body. We need to know the ins and outs of how our instrument works so we can play it beautifully. I integrate movement, anatomy & body awareness activities into every lesson.
2.) BREATH: Breath is foundation of singing. We need to breathe to live!and of course, to sing. I work closely with students to help them develop powerful & free-flowing breath.
3.) RESONANCE: Our breath moves through our body & vocal chords and creates resonance. I work with students to help them find the best breath direction, vowel placement, and vibration for their performance goals. The goal for everyonein any styleis to develop a beautiful balanced voice (Chiaroscuro) throughout their vocal range.
4.) MUSICIANSHIP: Singer-actors must also be musicians. It is important to have skills in sight-singing and ear-training, as well as developing proper vowel & vocal technique. I incorporate these skills throughout ongoing training.
5.) CHARACTER: Every singer-actor must learn to be a storyteller. Song-texts are often poems, stories or excerpts from a larger work, like a musical. Singers of all sorts embody characters in a story and interpret text for an audience. I love to help students develop their skill in text analysis, translation & find the story in the words they sing.
