Personal Statement
My name is Lydia Blackshear. I am a sophomore at the University of Montana Western in the K-12 Music Education program. I have played the clarinet and saxophone for 14 years with a variety of different ensembles. I enjoy working with children and adults of all skill levels and backgrounds. I only require one thing from my students – that they WANT to learn more about music and their instrument of choice.
Lessons with me are unique because I specialize in teaching only clarinet and saxophone. I choose to teach only these two instruments for a couple of reasons:
Firstly, I prefer not to be a jack of all trades and master of none. There are only so many hours per day a person can dedicate to private practice of their instrument let alone giving lessons to other musicians (especially when that person is also a full-time student!). Though I know how to produce a sound on all of the given band instruments, I do not have time to extensively study (and then teach) the repertoire or technique for all of these instruments.
Secondly, I just don’t get as excited about playing the trumpet or flute or anything else as I do about the clarinet and saxophone. It isn’t fair to the student when an instructor does not have a passion for the instrument they are attempting to instruct. Being in lessons is not only about developing skills through practice, but also about developing a desire to learn and push oneself. If an instructor can’t look forward to teaching a lesson, how can they expect their students to look forward to learning a lesson?

Education / Training
I currently study at the University of Montana Western in Dillon, MT in the K-12 Music Education program. I take lessons from Dr. Bert Brewer and Dr. Gay Garard-Brewer in voice and piano. They also coach me on my clarinet solo-work.
