Personal Statement

I believe it is very important for kids and adults in Juneau, Alaska to be exposed to the arts and it is difficult to find enough arts experiences. I love teaching music to students of all ages. I believe students can start to learn an appreciate music in lessons as early as age 4 and also that it’s never too late to learn more about music.

Education / Training

I am an experienced flute player and vocalist with training in music education. I grew up in Arvada, Colorado, a suburb of Denver, and played and sang in concert bands, orchestras, the marching band and choirs. I attended the University of Northern Colorado and earned a Bachelors Degree in K-12 Music Education. I have studied flute with Dr. Sylvia Greenfield, Dr. Nicole Riner, and have taken workshops with Robert Dick. I sang in choirs with Dr. Howard Skinner and Dr Galen Darrough. While at the University of Northern Colorado, I played flute in the Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, a flute quartet, and the University Symphony Orchestra, which won Downbeat Magazines award for best University Orchestra three out of my fours years at the school.

In 2009 I completed a Masters Degree in Arts Management from the University of Oregon with a certificate in Nonprofit Management. The degree brought me to Juneau where I was Executive Director of the Juneau Jazz & Classics Music Festival.

Since moving to Juneau in 2009, I have sung in the Marriage of Figaro, Elixir of Love, Juneau Lyric Operas Holiday Pops Chorus, Juneau Cabaret, Juneau Lyric Operas production of Handels Messiah, its Winter Concert, and the Mid-Winter Vocal Workshop. I was a singer in Juneau Lyric Operas Whos Your Diva? show. I co-founded the flute quartet Flutatious in 2009, which has played at the Folk Festival, Symphony Cruise, Symphony Showcase, First Fridays around town and various private parties, fundraisers and weddings. I played flute and piccolo in the Juneau Wind Ensemble, played flute and piccolo in Juneau-Douglas High School Music Man and other stage productions, and have appeared as a soloist in the Symphony Showcase and at the Mid-Winter Vocal Festival.

I have taught private music lessons off and on for the past twelve years and have taught flute at Harborview Elementary School for three years. I taught middle school band and 2 nd /3 rd grade group piano at the Juneau Community Charter School. I started Impassion Music Studio as a full time music studio in November, 2011.
