The mission of the Silverlake Conservatory of Music is to facilitate basic music education. The primary focus is on the youth of the community but all are welcome and encouraged to participate. The Conservatory offers private music lessons at a reasonable cost and grants scholarships to children in need, providing free lessons and instruments. The study of music enriches not only the life of the student but the community and society as well. The Silverlake Conservatory of Music was founded in 2001 by Flea, of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and long time friend and fellow musician, Keith Barry. The founders envisioned a place where students could come, regardless of economic ability, to learn music. The Conservatory offers classes in 25 different instruments, from the accordion to the violin. Currently the school has 600 students of which almost 15% are on a scholarship.
