The UA Fort Smith Academy of the Arts is a preparatory school in the visual and performing arts sponsored by the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. The Academy began in the fall of 2006 with 70 students, and in just two years is reaching over 300 students from preschool age through adult. Our mission is to stand at the forefront as the leader in the visual and performing arts. We seek to develop life skills in each student such as creativity, social skills, and self-confidence. Currently, we offer private instruction in piano, voice, flute, guitar, percussion, and low brass, along with drum team, Children’s Choir, Show Choir, acting classes, and small and large theatre productions. Our summer programs include a preschool camp in music, movement, and theatre, and a camp for grades 3-10 in music, theatre, dance, and art. Through the Academy we offer the Distinguished Artists Series, a music series presented by professional musicians, and the Showtime Series, a children’s theatre series presented by Academy theatre students. The Academy currently has 16 faculty who hold advanced degrees in their field, the Artistic Director, one part-time secretary, one student worker, and several college interns in music and theatre. The Academy is housed on the University campus, and has access to a variety of facilities including rehearsal and performance space.
