Founded by May Garrettson Evans in 1894, The Preparatory offers instruction in music and dance to a diverse student body of approximately 2,000 students beginning at 2 months. Youngsters and adults enroll in classes and/or individual instruction and may attend repertoire classes, master classes, and participate in a graduated recital series. They may also enroll in children’s chorus, orchestra, music theory, and chamber music and participate in certificate programs and school-wide competitions. The dance program includes ballet, contemporary, and ballroom dancing. Other special offerings include a Teacher Mentoring Program in Baltimore City Schools and a pre-conservatory violin program. In addition to its main school in downtown Baltimore, the Preparatory has branches in Towson, Columbia and Annapolis.
