Personal Statement
Mike Shuldes has been practicing French Horn for 17 years and holds a Masters degree in French Horn Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. His primary teacher, Bruce Roberts, is associate principal horn of the San Francisco Symphony, one of the most prestigious symphony orchestras in the United States, recognized worldwide.
Mike has performed for several major symphony orchestras, including Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Stockton Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Silicon Valley, Santa Rosa Symphony, Boise Philharmonic Orchestra, and he toured in Germany with the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra.
He is currently a member of One Found Sound Orchestra, an innovative “conductor-less” chamber orchestra, as well as the One Found Sound Woodwind Quintet. He is also a member of Elevate Ensemble, an artistic Chamber Orchestra involving music from new composers, art and visual performance during shows.
Currently he is focused on teaching, attending live orchestral auditions, and making great music in San Francisco.
EARLY LIFE
Mike enthusiastically began playing saxophone at the age of 10 and after entering high school, began study of the French horn at age 15. His talent was recognized when he won the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award from Meridian High School (ID). Soon after, he was recruited by the BLUE DEVILS Drum and Bugle Corps from Concord, CA. Upon discovering the Horn, he fell in love with the instrument for its profound sound and its challenging technique. He made it his life’s dedication, earning his bachelors degree in Horn performance at Boise State University in 2010 where he was named the Presser Scholar, followed by attending the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for his Masters degree in 2012.
METHOD
Mike Shuldes uses the most advanced technics to give French Horn lessons and make them easy to learn wether you start playing the French Horn, or want to perfect its technics. He teaches from early beginners to advanced players.
His method is very pedagogic and can be learned easily by children, teenagers and adults.
METHOD FOR TEENS/ADULTS
His method comes from his experience at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and teaching at Blue Devils Drum Corps.
It consists in one lesson in breathing exercises and stretching, warm up, technical practice, and then playing selected excerpts. The lesson takes an hour. Lessons are once or twice a week, depending on student commitment and practice.
METHOD FOR KIDS
Mike Shuldes is used to teach kids and uses very pedagogic communication to make French Horn practice a joy for each kid. He uses simple excerpts and make interactive music exchanges to make the kid evolve while playing.
