Violin Lessons for Children as Young as 3; Encouraging Learning Environment and Fun Curriculum
Hello! My name is Courtney, and I would be honored to have the opportunity to teach your child to play the violin. I began taking violin lessons at age six, over twenty years ago. I have had two private instructors and have played with ensembles of every size, including full orchestras. I chose to study environmental science in college rather than majoring in music, and I am currently pursuing an MBA with an emphasis in project management. The violin is something I do for fun, and I encourage the same attitude in my students, whether or not they decide to play professionally.
I firmly believe that children will only be successful violin students if they enjoy what they are doing and have the continued support of their parents and teacher. I am currently accepting beginning students roughly age five and up. I will accept students as young as age three if they have an attention span of 20-30 minutes and can recite their ABC’s.
Lessons are $80/month. This includes four private lessons and one group lesson. Students will need to provide their own instrument and books. Younger children may begin with a box violin until they learn to handle and care for a real one. We will not need them for the first lesson, but I use the Suzuki Violin School repertoire and either the String Explorer or Adventures in Violinland method books, depending on the age of the student and the preferences of his or her parents. All students will get a recording of their lesson and assignments and goals for the following week. We will do strengthening exercises and play games that target specific skills in addition to learning scales and expanding our repertoire. Students will also learn music theory, sight reading, musicianship, and performance etiquette. I use a lot of Suzuki teaching techniques with younger students, but I am not exclusively a Suzuki teacher.
