Neighborhood Music School (NMS), established during the Settlement House Movement in 1911, is a non-profit community arts school and concert venue offering a broad variety of high quality music and dance instruction and programming. As one of the 10 largest community arts schools in the Guild, NMS serves over 3,000 children and adults of all ages and levels of experience from 80 cities and towns throughout Connecticut and beyond. It offers instruction in 30 instruments, voice and dance, Suzuki and non-Western instrument instruction, theory and composition classes, jazz studies and early music programs, a state-certified arts-based preschool, summer arts, band and jazz camps, and one of the largest ensemble programs in the U.S. The School’s mission to increase access to high quality arts education is supported by a significant financial aid program and by an active community collaboration & partnership agenda. NMS is funded by tuition and charitable donations from individuals, foundations and corporations.
