General
The Oberlin Community Music School provides classes and lessons to students age three to adult in Northeast Ohio. Private lessons in various areas and Suzuki violin are the newest additions to the program that has included Conservatory faculty-run music classes for many years. MusicPlay, a 12-week program for children ages three to five, introduces musical concepts such as singing, moving, analyzing, and creating and also develops social skills such as listening and sharing. The classes are small with a maximum of 12 students per class. The PianoLab program is a 2-year program of group and private piano study for children ages seven to nine. Classes include informal prepared and improvised performances, reading and rhythm activities, and physical motion. The String Prep Program, a 13-week program for the beginning elementary-aged string player, also employs private and group classes to enrich playing experiences for the beginning string player. The PianoLab and String Prep Programs both provide a place where Conservatory students may refine and develop their skills as teachers in a supervised setting. Oberlin is committed to providing children of all ages with a positive musical experience
