Founded as a memorial to a young concert violinist who was killed in WWI, the David Hochstein Memorial Music School provides comprehensive music and dance training to all interested persons. Instruction is offered in all orchestral instruments, piano, voice, harp, percussion, acoustic and electric guitar and electric bass. Chamber music, orchestral and wind bands, choirs, and jazz combos offer ensemble opportunities to students of various skills and experience levels. Suzuki strings and flute and Orff-Schulwerk are offered for young learners, and music theory/history classes provide musicianship training to children and adults. Dance instruction in ballet, modern, jazz, tap, Caribbean-Latin, African, and creative movement is offered at beginning and advanced levels, and two dance ensembles offer regular performance opportunities. The music therapy department provides specially tailored services to physically, developmentally and emotionally challenged students. Summer programs include a musical theatre workshop and week-long arts camps for children (and often adults) interested in guitar, flute, chamber music, jazz, band and orchestra. More than 4,000 students are served annually in music, dance and music therapy.
