The school’s comprehensive curriculum includes private and group lessons in piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, and voice; musicianship classes; weekly recitals; and participation in choral, orchestral, chamber music, and jazz ensembles. In addition, the school presents over 30 professional concerts and master classes with world-renowned artists each year. It also offers an extensive outreach program in the Englewood Public Schools. School students have performed at Lincoln Center, in Carnegie Hall, on the PBS television series Sesame Street, in the PBS special, Itzhak Perlman: Fiddling for the Future, in the feature film Music of the Heart, and with such renowned artists as Pinchas Zukerman, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Bell, and Paquito D’Rivera. Graduates of the Thurnauer School of Music are now studying at the Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music, the Juilliard School, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. Winner of an “Award of Excellence” from the Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, the JCC Thurnauer School of Music is an integral part of the Jewish Community Center on the Palisades, a not-for-profit organization devoted to providing social and cultural services each year to over 13,000 people of all ages, races, religions, and ethnic backgrounds in 63 communities throughout Bergen County.
