Personal Statement
I am excited to share my love of music with you by teaching you or your child to play violin or fiddle! A musical instrument can be your friend for life and I hope that youll give me the honor of introducing you to this lifelong friend.
My musical journey began when I was 8 years old as I started taking Suzuki violin lessons with Joanne Melvin (Chair, Suzuki Association of the Americas Board of Directors, 2003). She helped me to build a strong musical foundation and to develop a keen musical ear. In addition to teaching classical repertoire from the Suzuki talent education books, she also taught a variety of fiddle tunes. I fell in love with the Irish tune, Swallow Tail Jig, and the ever popular fiddle show piece, the Orange Blossom Special. Not long after, I was fiddling my way across eastern North Carolina and loving every minute of it. I have performed for over 20 years on stages grand and small, at festivals, museums, churches, celebrations, and more.
In addition to fiddling, I offer several years of group performance experience with the Barton College Wilson Symphony Orchestra, as well as with concert, marching, and jazz bands on my secondary instrument, the alto saxophone.
I studied Suzuki Pedagogy at East Carolina University with pioneer Joanne Bath, one of the first violin teachers to use the Suzuki method in the United States. As part of the Suzuki Pedagogy program, I also had the wonderful experience of teaching violin to at-risk pre-school boys and girls, gaining valuable practical teaching knowledge.
I am now a Suzuki violin teacher registered with the Suzuki Association of the Americas, an organization of which I am also an active member. I teach from my home studio in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Education / Training
After completing my Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I studied Instructional Technology Education at East Carolina University, earning my Master of Science degree. My educational background and experiences provided valuable contact with a variety of instructional methods, strategies, and philosophies. I then decided to merge my experience in education with my love of music.
I studied Suzuki Pedagogy at East Carolina University with pioneer Joanne Bath, one of the first violin teachers to use the Suzuki method in the United States. Not only is she an expert with decades of experience in teaching young people to play violin beautifully, she is a highly respected violinist and pedagogue whose many honors include the prestigious North Carolina Award in Fine Arts. As part of the Suzuki Pedagogy program, I also had the wonderful experience of teaching violin to at-risk pre-school boys and girls, gaining valuable practical teaching knowledge.
