Personal Statement

What is unique about The Piano Studio of Joy Morin?

Under my teaching, students experience firsthand that music is also a creative art as well as an interpretive art. They learn not only learn how to express themselves through artistic performances of various styles of music, but they also learn how to make their own music through improvisation and composition. In addition, students receive a comprehensive musical education through theory/aural training, music history lessons, and performing for peers during monthly Studio Classes. These skills are all important for developing well-rounded, knowledgable musicians. Join me, and pursue the musician in you!

Teaching Philosophy:

It is my goal to develop in each of my students a comprehensive understanding of music which enables them to play the piano with utmost enjoyment and musicality. My teaching style is filled with a strong sense of dedication and commitment to my students. A supportive atmosphere with honest yet positive criticism enables students to become self-motivated, independent learners.

Quality piano instruction with comprehensive musicianship is achieved through focused private lessons and a variety of studio events. Private lessons typically focus on artistic performances of piano repertoire, sightreading, and learning rudimentary exercises — with some time reserved for theory/ear training assignments, improvisation/composition activities, and ensemble work. Although an emphasis is placed on classical repertoire, the student’s curriculum is always tailored to the student’s interests and goals. Comprehensive musicianship and a spirit of camaraderie is developed through monthly Studio Classes, both formal and informal performance opportunities, optional achievement evaluations, and other studio events.

I am a firm believer in the benefits of piano study for all individuals, regardless of age and ability. To this end, in addition to private lessons, my studio offers Piano Readiness Classes to even the youngest of beginners. Piano study develops not only a lifelong appreciation and love for music, but also important life skills — including creativity, concentration, dedication, diligence, and perseverance. Parents are encouraged to be actively supportive and involved in their student’s musical education. My students find great satisfaction and enjoyment in studying the piano and developing their musical abilities.
