Personal Statement

I am a Senior music education and saxophone performance major at Northwestern University. I have been on the Dean’s List every quarter at Northwestern, and have outstanding academic achievement awards in multiple subjects, including English, history, math, and music. I graduated high school as Valedictorian, with an AP Diploma.

I have taught saxophone (and music) for 9 years to students of all ages and backgrounds. I have considerable experience working with students with various forms of ADHD. I have been a clinician, teaching high school marching band for 4 years, including saxophone sectionals. I have taught many students in the Fairfax County Public School system, as well as students in the Chicago All-City Band. I also have one year’s experience running and directing the NU Community Stage Band, a Jazz Big Band, at Northwestern.

At Northwestern, I study saxophone with world-renown Dr. Frederick L. Hemke, and I have studied with SGM Rick Parrell (principal saxophonist of the Army Band) and Senior Chief Musician Timothy Roberts (principal saxophonist of the Navy Band). I have over 12 years of experience playing the saxophone; 10 years of experience playing in various large music ensembles, including Symphonic Bands, Wind Enselmbles, Marching Bands, Jazz Bands, and Contemporary Music Ensembles; and 4 years of experience playing in small ensembles (such as saxophone quartets).

My teaching philosophy is based on evaluating the needs of the student, identifying what methodology will fit best with the student’s personality and specific needs, and applying that methodology in encouraging ways that bring immediate success. Once a concept has been learned or a skill has been mastered, I use this new knowledge to propel the student forward.

I love to teach because I love to help people, and I love to learn.
