Personal Statement

I have worked as a musician in various genres stretching from classical to jazz, from R&B to singer/songwriter. And what I know for sure is that the techniques a vocalist learns in classical voice training serves as a strong foundation for all the other genres. Wanna sing like Aretha? Learn your Handel.

My goal as an instructor is to sharpen your technical skills including basic music theory, jazz theory, vocal technique and so that you can effectively and properly utilize your instrument.

Education / Training

My musical life has been a rather fulfilling one to date. I started in elementary school playing violin under the direction of Mr. David Berry in one of Detroit’s finest public school orchestras. I studied violin privately with DSO’s Viola Kelly until high school, where I began playing double bass under the direction of Francis Gbur (private study with DSO’s Stephen Molina). Toward the end of my high school career, I studied Jazz performance with Pamela Wise, Francisco Mora, Jr., and the late Donald Walden.

After high school, I studied Jazz voice with April Tini. I’m currently wrapping up a BA, Music degree at Wayne State University as a voice primary under the direction Ivan Griffin. My classical repertoire includes Baroque and Classical arias, recitatives, oratorios, 19th & 20th century folk pieces and spirituals. As well I perform regularly as a vocalist for 9-piece Classic Soul ensemble, The Saints of Soul.
