Personal Statement
Oboist Hsuan-Fong Chen generously shares her passion for creating meaningful musical experiences with her audiences. A native of Taiwan who came to the United States at age 16, she is an active orchestral player, as well as an enthusiastic soloist and chamber musician. In 2014, she was a finalist for Principal Oboe of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, she was also a runner up for Assistant Principal/ 2nd Oboe of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra in 2012 and made her debut playing principal with the orchestra in Woolsey Hall in New Haven. Other orchestral highlights include performing Handels Messiah with the New York Philharmonic under the baton of Gay Thor Widow last winter and the Kindertotenlieder song cycle with Thomas Hampson under Maestro Fabio Luisi at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan.
Hsuan-Fong has given solo recitals in Taiwan and the US including Sinfonia Concertante with the Taoyuan Wu-Ling Senior High School Orchestra in 2004 and Concerto in F Major by Bach with the Walnut Hill Orchestra in 2007. A passionate chamber musician, she has given multiple world premieres of new music at The Juilliard School, including the American premiere of Eliot Carters Wind Rose for wind ensemble. She has performed chamber music at Yale School of Music as well, including the Mel Powell Woodwind Quintet at the Hindemith’s tribute Chamber series at Zankel Hall Carnegie Hall.
Hsuan-Fongs prizes include first prize at the 2003 National Oboe Competition in Taiwan, second prize at the New England Conservatory Preparatory Schools concerto competition, finalist at the Boston Symphony Orchestras youth concerto competition and honorable mention at the Brockton Symphony Orchestras youth concerto competition. She has appeared in summer festival including Boston Universitys Tanglewood Institute, where she played with the youth orchestra, as well as the Greenwood, Indiana University Summer Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, the Pacific Music Festival and Spoleto Festival, USA, Schlolass Beuggen in Rheinfelden Germany, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and Atlantic Music Festival.
Hsuan-Fong is also an accomplished pianist. She won numerous piano competitions in Taiwan and was also featured with her teacher Da-Ming Zu in the National Palace Museums historical film “A Museum Without Walls”. In 2005, she received first prize at the American Fine Arts Festival, which led to a solo performance in Carnegie Halls Weill Hall. She received the first prize at the Music Teachers National Association piano competitions in 2005 and 2007. In 2006, she performed Julia Careys work for solo piano in Jordan Hall in New England Conservatorys Contemporary Music Festival.
A native of Taiwan, Hsuan-Fong came to the United States to pursue her musical studies and graduated from the Walnut Hill School in Natick, MA. She received her Bachelor of Music degree at The Juilliard School, where she studied with Nathan Hughes, Elaine Douvas, Pedro Diaz, and Linda Strommen. She received her Masters of Music as well as Artist Diploma at Yale School of Music, studied with Stephen Taylor.
Hsuan-Fong recently completed Orchestral Performance program at Manhattan School of Music, studied with Liang Wang.
