Personal Statement

Sarah’s primary goals as a music educator are to help students improve their fundamental skills and knowledge of repertoire, grow their confidence as musicians and people, and encourage a lifelong love for music and clarinet.

Sarah has been teaching clarinet in locations around Wisconsin and Sydney, Australia since 2004, and began teaching in the Twin Cities, MN area in 2011. She has a Master’s Degree in clarinet performance from the University of Minnesota, and a Bachelor of Music from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. She is an active freelance performer, along with co-managing and playing for her own chamber music ensemble, The Antithesis Project and serving on Zeitgeist New Musics Board of Directors. She also enjoys giving master classes and leading sectionals at Twin Cities area schools and her private studio, along with serving as Adjunct Faculty of Applied Clarinet at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Sarah has performed with many ensembles in the United States and internationally, including the Spitting Image Collective, St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra, New South Wales Police Band and Wind Quintet, Rockdale Opera Company, Australian Army Band (Sydney), Sydney Wind Symphony, Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra, Kettle Moraine Symphony, and the Joffrey Ballet. Recording credits include Bb and bass clarinets on the New South Wales Police Band’s 2009 album Ceremonial and Parade Music, and Bb and Eb clarinets with the University of Minnesota Wind Ensemble on an album of new music by Gregory Mertl, to be released late 2014.

Sarah enjoys teaching students of all ages, and tailors each lesson to fit the individual needs of the student. Lessons will include instruction in the areas of tone production, breathing and air flow, rhythm, articulation, knowledge of key signatures, musicality, and any other areas the student may wish to improve on.
