Personal Statement

Each student is different. It is very important that a teacher does not use the same methods and tips for each individual student but finds the right approach based on student’s age, level, personality and musical taste.

Working with children: When I work with little children 3-5 years old, I like to use variety of 5 min technics including finding keys, recognizing notes, ear training, work with flash cards and etc in order to keep their attention and make sure that they are having fun through the entire lesson time. I also try to understand what is their musical taste at early age and from there on select the most enjoyable repertoire. The rest is my secret. Call to find out!

Working with adults: with adults that learn how to play the piano for fun I often find a lot of problems with their technic and serious gaps in there early musical education that were not taken care during their 1st lessons. In this case, I am very patient and I select variety of short pieces and contrasting repertoire so that way we can focus on filling the gaps by completing shorter projects at first. By learning shorter pieces each lesson, adult students are more motivated and they look forward to the next lesson to work on newer selections.

With professional artists and students preparing for career in piano performance or college auditions I work very intensively and my teaching method is very detailed. At each college audition it is important that the jury hears variety of styles, solid technic, musical phrasing, feeling. each rest, slur and pedaling must be precise. It requires a lot of practicing and dedication. Music is a language and learning how to speak it is one of my other secrets when it comes to professional performance.

Another VERY important tip to all – beginners, advances and professionals is LIVE PERFORMANCE! By offering to my students performance opportunities 3-4-5 times per semester (which most teachers do not do) – that develops love, personality and better music appreciation. My students do not get nervous when they perform. They enjoy sharing their love and passion of music with friends, with my studio class, with their families and those who are professionals – with their audiences.

(Harry Rolnick, ConcertoNet.com), “a fully formed and fearsomely talented pianist” (Steve Holtje, CultureCatch.com) and “bold, dynamic, magnificent!” (Harris Goldsmith), the “Bulgarian-born piano dynamo (Steve Smith, Time Out New York) Tania Stavreva made her Carnegie Hall debut in April 2009.

Ms. Stavreva has performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, Kosciuszko Foundation Auditorium, Steinway Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Rubin Museum of Art, Galapagos Art Space, Roulette, Bulgarian Consulate General, New York Public Library, and the CSV Cultural Center in New York where she was featured live on NY1 News by NBC reporter Asa Aarons. She has performed also at the GRAMMY Museum Theater in Los Angeles, Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, National Ethnographic Museum in Bulgaria, Cathedral San Lorenzo in Italy, and the Ruinekerk in The Netherlands.

In July 2011 her multimedia performance Rhythmic Movement took place at the Metropolitan Room in NYC where for a first time she performed body painted, connecting the music of Erik Satie to the work by artist Danny Setiawan. Rhythmic Movement was immediately featured on NY1 News as well as Time Out New York and New York Daily News. On May 10th, 2012 Ms. Stavreva collaborated with the internationally-acclaimed body painter and artist Derrick Little at Galapagos Art Space in New York on another multimedia project titled Rhythmic Movement Multimedia. This time live music and live body painting were connected through abstract music-color synesthesia. The young pianist also made her acting debut with the Onomatopoeia Theater Company as Sasia in The Tempest by William Shakespeare – an off-off Broadway modern adaptation in March, 2012.

In 2009, invited by Amanda Palmer from the internationally-acclaimed band The Dresden Dolls, Tania is one of the first pianists of her generation to perform modern classical music at such rock club venues as Webster Hall (NYC) and Paradise Rock Club (Boston, MA). She has also collaborated with Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Fantomas) and Will Calhoun (Living Color, B.B. King).

Tania Stavreva is a graduate of the “Dobrin Petkov” National Music School in Bulgaria, where she studied with renowned pedagogue Rositsa Ivancheva. She went on to earn her Bachelor’s Degree from Boston Conservatory, where she was a full scholarship recipient and a winner of many competitions. She’s been on the piano faculty of the Boston International Summer Music Festival, Piano School of NYC, Long Island City Academy of Music, the Page Music Lessons Center where she was also the director and founder of the Page Music Piano Performance Program.

Due to her busy concert schedule, Tania Stavreva is currently teaching only privately. She also organizes many performance opportunities for her students. Many of them have appeared at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Kaufman Center, Greenwich House Music School, Caffe Vivaldi, WMP Concert Hall and many others.
