Personal Statement

I’ve taught for almost 20 years in various situations. For example, trumpet lessons, jazz combos, jazz improvisation, jazz ensembe, and music theory are different courses I’ve instructed.

I’ve taught students to overcome challenges too.

My patience, explanations on how to play various styles, teaching a wide range of levels from a beginner to a professional. Also, attendance, and promptness have been my strengths.

Many students have earned employment in the music industry with my help.

I teach private trumpet lessons also.

I have over 20 years of performance experience too.

Jam sessions, jazz and R&B gigs, reading a Broadway show score, sight reading music, playing “Taps” plus church performances make me a well- rounded trumpet player.

Education / Training

My trumpet teachers have included Bernie Black from the River City Brass Band, and Dr. John Winkler from West Virginia University.

I studied jazz at West Virginia University with Mr. David Hastings and Curtis Johnson.

At Carnegie Mellon University Pre- College I studied jazz improv and big band with the late Randy Purcell.

I also had Dr. James “Buster” Alston with private jazz studies.

In addition, I studied with Wes Ward, former trumpet instructor for the Unversity of pittsburgh jazz studies.

I now have Mr. Ralph Guzzi for the University of Pittsburgh Jazz Ensemble.
