Personal Statement

Former principal cellist of the Orquestra Simfunica Estadual de Sao Paulo, Byron Duckwall played his first recital at the age of 8. At 18, he played the Saint Saens concerto in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall. Later he played for the Metropolitan Opera Association in New York City. In his New York debut, the New York Times wrote,”a luscious sound tempered by a sensitive feeling for the music’s rhythmic lilt and subtly shifting colors.” After recently launching a new website, masterthecello.com Byron began work on a new book “The Dounis Method – The Science of Expressive Technique” with famed cellist George Neikrug on the teaching methods of pedagogue Demetruis Dounis.

Byron has taught all levels for over 20 years and has a Masters Degree in Music from San Francisco State University. He is an expert in the Dounis principles of string playing having studied with Dounis’s principal student George Neikrug for over 20 years.
