If you love music and really want to learn how to perform, I can help you. Determination is the key to success. Each practice session will build your skills towards the next level. I believe in a progressive step by step approach to teaching. I will show you how to create a beautiful artistic tone and a brilliant technique. My teachers have given me many secrets to performance that I can share with you in your quest to become a great musician. I enjoy working with both young people and adults.

Education / Training

Dr. Carolyn Broe, violist, violinist and conductor has been the featured soloist with orchestras in California and Arizona. She received her Bachelors in Music from Chapman University attending on a Presidential Scholarship. She holds a Masters in Fine Arts in Music from California State University, Long Beach. Carolyn earned her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Viola Solo Performance from Arizona State University in 2001. She studied viola with Louis Kievman, Adriana Chirilov and William Magers. She studied conducting with John Koshak and Michael Zearott and took master classes with Leonard Bernstein, Herbert Blomstedt, and Seiji Ozawa.

Carolyn Broe is the conductor of the Four Seasons Orchestra of Scottsdale, Arizona. This excellent professional orchestra will be touring to Vienna, Austria to perform in the Haydn Bicentennial Festival in 2009. She is the Viola Instructor at Paradise Valley Community College. She has also taught at Mesa and Scottsdale Community Colleges. She is the violist with the Four Seasons String Quartet which was nominated in two Grammy categories. Broe received the Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture “Artist Award” for 2005. She has also been named the “Woman of the Year” and “Who’s Who of Women” by Marquis Who’s Who.

Carolyn Broe practices the traditional western methods of string teaching. She is well versed in the Suzuki, Dounis, Kievman and Galamian methods. She has presented her research on women viola composers to the American String Teacher Association. Carolyn Broe presented her research on composer Louise Lincoln Kerr at the Athena Festival. She has written two academic dissertations and published numberous articles on the viola, Louis Kievman, Louise Kerr and women composers. She has also designed an orchestral excerpt class.

She has recorded on numerous CD’s. She has performed with Ray Charles, Donna Summers, Smokey Robinson, and Diana Ross. She has worked with famous conductors such as Leonard Bernstein, Christopher Hogwood, Kenneth Schirmerhorn, Herbert Blomstedt, Daniel Lewis, Michael Zearott, Alvaro Cassuto, Akira Endo, Mehli Mehta and Zubin Mehta. She has performed with famous classical soloists Itzahk Perlman, Andre Watt, and Angel Romero to name a few.

Carolyn Broe has performed with many professional orchestras in both California and Arizona including: the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony, Four Seasons Orchestra of Scottsdale, Long Beach Symphony, Capestrano Valley Symphony, Mozart Camerata, Orange County Philharmonic and Musica Nova Orchestra.
