Personal Statement
Mary-Elizabeth Brown is the Founder and Director of Strings Around The World, and a sought-after teacher, clinician, adjudicator and speaker. She has facilitated workshops in the Aldeburgh Young Musicians Program and the Neojiba Project (Salvador, Bahia, Brasil), led the 2008 Sembrando Talentos project in Montevideo (in collaboration with Mozarteum Uruguay) and played an integral role in the development of the El Sistema movement in London Canada. She has been a clinician for numerous public and high school string retreats and workshops.
Closer to home, Mary-Elizabeth has spent more than a decade as a successful private studio teacher of pupils ranging from “twinklers” to teenagers eager to pursue performance careers. Her students have been successful in competitions at the local, provincial and national levels, and can be found in some of Canada’s top music performance programs. A thorough grounding in the Suzuki Method, Galamian technique, traditional fiddle music as well a deep knowledge of music theory and history make her an ideal choice for Suzuki Method lessons and preparations for the Royal Conservatory of Music, Carnegie Hall Achievement and Associated Royal Board’s examinations. A firm believer in Shinichi Suzuki’s “Every Child Can” philosophy, she welcomes the opportunity to teach all children, including those with learning disabilities or other challenges (ADD, ADHD, Tourette Syndrome etc.).
Mary-Elizabeth’s passion for teaching adult amateurs extends far beyond her faculty position at Lake Field Music, Ontario’s foremost summer retreat for adult amateur musicians. Adult amateurs are welcome, whether returning to the violin after years away or fulfilling a life-long dream to be able to make music. No one is ever too old to learn.
A firm believer that music education should reach people of all ages and provides a great way to build bridges to the arts, Mary-Elizabeth has given talks and presentations across Canada to sales professionals and music affectionados alike. She is associated with the Suzuki Association of the Americas, the American String Teachers Association, the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers and the Canadian Music Educator’s Association.

Canadian violinist Mary-Elizabeth Brown has delighted audiences around the world and earned accolades for her ability to unfold bittersweet magic (Rhein Main Presse) and perfect command of her instrument (Florsheim Zeitung). In recent seasons, she has toured as a soloist in Europe, Asia, North and South America, and has appeared at the Festival Campos do Jordao (Brazil), Mozarteum Uruguay, The White House (USA), the Aldeburgh Festival (UK), Arts and Letters Club of Toronto, Indian River Festival, Elora Festival and Banff Summer Arts Festival (Canada). In addition to being heard on numerous radio and television broadcasts, she has recorded for Cambria Records, EMI, Marquis, Hanssler Classic and GLOR Classics.
Equally at home as a concertmaster, Mary-Elizabeth has led orchestras under the direction of noted conductors Lorin Maazel, Kryszstof Penderecki, Benjamin Zander, Carlos Miguel Prieto, Helmuth Rilling, Isaac Karabtchevsky and Placido Domingo among others. In demand as an orchestral leader, she was the Associate Concertmaster of Orchestra London Canada from 2006-2012, served as Concertmaster of YOA Orchestra of the Americans from 2006-2008, and led the Britten-Pears Orchestra (at the Aldeburgh Festival) from 2007-2009. She has held her current post as the Concertmaster of the critically acclaimed, Juno-winning chamber orchestra Sinfonia Toronto since 2007.
Mary-Elizabeth holds degrees from the University of Toronto and lUniversit de Montreal where she received the Prix dExcellence en Interpretation in 2006. Her principal teachers and mentors include David Zafer, Mark Skazinetsky, Ilya Kaler, Vladimir Landsman and Leon Spierer. She has soloed in masterclasses with Regis Pasqier, Pierre Amoyal, Sylvia Rosenberg, Jean-Jacques Kantorow, Pamela Frank, Pinchas Zukerman and the late Lorand Fenyves. As a chamber musician, she received her formative training with members of the St. Lawrence, Brentano, Orford and Alban Berg Quartets as well as the Gryphon Trio and Laurence Lesser.
