General
For over 12 years, Opus 118 has used music education and string playing to promote the love of music, improve academic performance, provide alternatives to drugs and violence, build confidence and self-esteem and help children explore the world. Opus 118’s three core programs include the In-Schools Music Program which provides violin instruction to students in seven Harlem public schools; the After-School Music Program which provides individual and group instruction on violin, viola, cello, piano and guitar; and Teacher Training which teaches the methods developed by Opus founder and Artistic Director, Roberta Guaspari. The impact of Opus 118’s work is documented in the Academy Award-nominated film, Music of the Heart, starring Meryl Streep and the documentary, Small Wonders. Based in East Harlem, Opus 118 serves approximately 500 students through its In-School program and approximately 400 students in its after-school Conservatory program
