Personal Statement

I’ve been playing the Saxophone for many years. Originally from Saint Louis Missouri, which is a great music town, I moved to New York in 1991 to continue my education in Communications and Design, but have continued my love of music along the way. In my own musical studies, I have focused on classical and jazz theory, but also enjoy rock and blues.

While I know each individual will have their own interests and musical direction, I do think it is important to focus on the basics to create a strong foundation. A good tone, reading fundamentals, scales in all keys, classical studies, jazz theory, ear training and improvisation are all part of becoming a well rounded player.

I enjoy teaching, since I enjoy practicing and sharing what I’ve learned. I also find that sharing information can help someone become a better player too as you take what you know and present it in a way someone else can absorb and understand. I do believe in a good balance between disciplined practice and playing with others. Many of the best experiences come from interaction with other musicians and the opportunity to listen, respond and experiment.
