Personal Statement
Jessica Nickel has been teaching violin, viola, piano, and guitar for eleven years in the private studio setting. She has her B.S. in music education from the University of Vermont, and holds an EdM in music education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Jessica is currently working toward her doctorate in music education at Teachers College and teaching violin and viola lessons in New York City.
In addition to private lessons, Jessica has taught band, orchestra, piano, music composition and production, chorus, and general music for eight years in public schools in both Vermont and, most recently, in New York City. Jessica has also taught violin, viola and cello at community and private music schools. Jessica’s students have moved on to study at Juilliard Pre-Collegiate Division, as well as to hold positions in local youth orchestras.
Jessica has studied with several excellent teachers, including Dr. Katherine Sinsabaugh, Dr. Kathryn Lucktenburg, Dr. Sheila Brown, and Ms. Evelyn Read. She has studied chamber music with Dr. Michael Carrerra at the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. Her teaching influences include Kato Havas, Mimi Zweig, Ivan Galamian, Shinichi Suzuki, and Maxine Greene. In her lessons, Jessica stresses respectful communication, physical relaxation, proper technique, and musical expression.
