Personal Statement
I have been teaching privately since I was in college with students of all ages and levels. I also have a masters degree in education which trained me to teach at the highest level. I have been a music teacher in the public school system for 6 years working with all types of learners. I work to find ways so that every student of mine is successful.
In my lessons there are several components. For beginner students I will normally start them with the Rubank Elementary Method book. When the student has learned his/her first few notes I begin to incorporate selections from 40 Little Pieces in Progressive Order from the Louise Moyse Flute Collection. If the student is more advanced I select various types of solo repertoire that is appropriate for their level and let the student decide which piece they want to learn. My lessons also always include playing duets, etudes, and scales to build technique and ensemble work.
My approach to teaching is unique in that I focus on teaching the student as a whole. I work with students to not only achieve their musical goals, but to build confidence, take risks, learn problem solving, foster creativity, and have fun! I push my students through challenges, and I am always there to support them. The biggest reward is for me to see the excitement in my students’ faces when they accomplish their goals!
Education / Training
I was lucky enough to attend the University of Southern California for both my Bachelors and Masters. I received my Bachelors degree in Music with an emphasis in Flute Performance. I then continued on to receive my Masters of Arts in Teaching with an emphasis in Instrumental Music. During my undergraduate years I had the great opportunity to study with Jim Walker who was an excellent professor. Other teachers I have studied with include Brad Garner, and Jill Felber.
