Personal Statement

I’m well known in Los Angeles musical circles as an orchestral performer (LA Opera for 20 years; sub in the LA Phil on both cello and viola da gamba; principal cellist of the LA Mozart Orchestra), as soloist and chamber player, in hundreds of motion pictures and recordings–and most important for right now, as a dedicated teacher.

You’ll see that I’ve been teaching for a long time. I wish I could say that I started out as a first-rate teacher, but I fear it took me some years to become really good at what I do, and I have happily discovered as I go along that I continue to refine the art, and to learn from my students. Different students require different avenues of instruction, and it’s my job to assess the best approach with each person.

Who is an ideal student for me? You will generally be a person fascinated by things besides music (there ARE things besides music, I believe…), will have a passion for music, and a desire to learn as much as you can about it. You will probably either have a good sense of humor, or at least be willing to laugh at my jokes. You will probably be at least junior high age (I will refer younger kids to one of several outstanding LA teachers who are wizards with the youngsters; though I am a great father, I’m not the gifted teacher of little kids that some of these folks are!), and yes, you’ll be willing to practice!

These days I have mainly been teaching college and conservatory students, but I do have a small private studio, and I have an excellent record of preparing students for music conservatory or colleges. I also welcome adult beginners!

You ought to be asking, though: Am I the right teacher for YOU? Give a call–let’s talk.

Yours,

Roger Lebow
