Personal Statement
I have had the privilege of studying music and the oboe from many world renowned teachers and performers, whose influence have guided my playing and teaching styles. My approach is based on problem-solving, both musical and technical. In my own playing, I feel that it is important to hone in on fundamental issues, rather than addressing problems on the surface. This allows for long-term growth and satisfaction, as opposed to a “teaching-to-the-test” style that only achieves temporary success.
I believe that the oboe is an instrument of great elegance, and I strive to teach my students to genuinely express themselves within a framework of informed musical taste. Additionally, as oboists we are required to craft our own reeds; this is an aspect that I have put a great deal of thought into, and generously share my skills through my personal business, www.riggsoboereeds.com. Please visit my website for my complete biography.
