Statement of Educational Philosophy:

I consider my role as an educator one of great responsibility. As a music educator, I will be dealing with a variety of students spanning from those exploring the possibility of a career in music, to those who just want to have fun playing an instrument or singing a few times a week. No matter what the level of interest, it is my duty to help these students grow. Each student has his/her interests, and I must do the absolute best job that I can to help each student in the exploration of these interests.

Music Education is an important part of education. It is not more or less important than other subjects, but it is equally as important. Yes, there are practical applications for music in society. Besides the exploration of the technical manipulation of sound with either a musical instrument or the voice, music imparts self-discipline, creative thinking, historical analysis, the physics of sound, and it is mathematically precise. Over 70 years of documented data proves that students who study a musical instrument or voice privately score as much as 25 % higher on standardized testing than those that do not. Yet, the intrinsic rewards of music are simply too great to dismiss. In the same way that true athletes gain those intrinsic rewards from participation in athletic events, musicians gain from participation in musical events. In the same way sports fans understand the pride they feel from their hometown team, audiences gain from the musical experience. And, in the same way physical education is important whether or not an athletic career is chosen, people need a music education regardless of the chosen career.

It is my responsibility to see that, to the best of my ability, the students experience learning from as many different sources as possible, making learning enjoyable and something that they realize is life long, not just for their youth.
